Album: TO ROCOCO ROT – abc123 (Domino RUG265CD 2007)

To Rococo Rot’s new mini LP represents quite a radical break from the group’s past. There are eight short instrumentals (only one breaking the three minute barrier) dispensed with in under 20 minutes. The warm, analogue sounds of yore have been replaced by clinical, digital computer-driven melodies. It is an experiment by the trio to produce something quickly and simply. Tracks are as long as they need to be to get the ideas across. There is no flab. Everything is trimmed down to its bare essentials. Some of it comes across as a bit throwaway. “abc”, for example, is 104 seconds of random beats over a synth wash that fades in and out. Generally, though, the pieces are charming and fascinating. A full length album is promised for early next year
