Ital Tek – Death By a Thousand Cuts (Bandcamp).

In between albums Alan Myson regularly puts out five or six track digital EPs comprised of tunes that were left over, are work in progress, or for any other reason aren’t on the core LPs. What could be a mopping up exercise of sub-standard material is actually always far from that. The EPs usually make sense as a unit, and often have material at least as good as the albums. Ital Tek has travelled from his early dubstep origins to cinematic, bass and dread heavy soundscapes. The first three tracks on this EP, for example, are brooding, beatless, bass driven beauties. Then “Piecer” introduces industrial jackhammer beats to the mix, and things get a whole level darker. The title track has big synth lines, distortion and a solitary kick bass. “Pulling Teeth” threatens to finish with a crescendo, but pulls the punch. So another six good reasons why Myson is one of my favourite producers working at the moment.
